If you intend to preserve your crop by making jams, pickles, pastes and sauces, you’ll need to sterilise your jars to prevent contamination and extend the life of your produce. There are a variety of ways to sterilise jars, but don’t be intimidated, all methods are really easy!
On the stove:
Place clean, washed jars and lids in a large pot on the stove and cover with cold water. Bring water to the boil and boil for 10 minutes. Drain and dry the jars and lids on a clean, dry tea towel.
In the dishwasher:
Place clean jars and lids in the dishwasher and wash on hottest setting. Some dishwashers come with a specific setting to sterilise jars and bottles.
In the oven:
Place clean jars (and lids) upright on a tray in the oven whilst the oven is cold. Turn oven on to 110°C (225°F) and bake in oven for 30 minutes.
